About Belongas Bay
Belongas Bay is one of Lombok's most thrilling and demanding waves, firing over a shallow reef with powerful, hollow barrels that demand respect. The break is best known for its fast, thick tubes that can hold serious size, drawing experienced surfers willing to handle the commitment. Crowds are thin thanks to the remote location, rewarding those who make the journey with uncrowded, world-class waves. Advanced surfers comfortable with heavy reef breaks will find this one of the most exhilarating spots in the region.
Local knowledge
The reef at Belongas is extremely shallow and lined with sharp, live coral — a wipeout at the wrong moment can mean serious lacerations or worse. A notorious, powerful rip runs along the reef that can sweep unprepared surfers into the impact zone or toward the rocks; knowing how to read and use it is essential. Oceanic whitetip sharks have been sighted in the bay, an added risk worth taking seriously at this remote, deep-water location.
Belongas Bay sits in the remote south of Lombok — take the road toward Sekotong and follow signs toward Belongas village; a basic warung near the bay serves as a landmark and informal staging point. The wave is best reached by paddling out through the channel on the east side of the reef; study the rip before entry as it can be used to assist the paddle-out but will punish the unwary on the way back in. A boat assist from a local fisherman or surf boat is a smart option on bigger days, making channel drops and safe exits far more manageable.
On standard 4–6 ft days bring a performance shortboard or a slightly thicker step-up (6'2"–6'6") that can handle fast, hollow sections and late take-offs over shallow reef. When Belongas is pushing 6–8 ft and above, move into a proper step-up or semi-gun (6'6"–7'2") — this wave gets thick and consequential fast, and you need the paddle power and hold to match it.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
