About Rags Right
Rags Right is a punchy, fast-breaking right-hander set on the same reef as its left-hand counterpart, offering hollow and powerful waves for confident surfers. The wave throws quickly off the reef, rewarding those who can read the take-off and hold a clean line through the barrel. It can handle a decent range of swell sizes and is a great complement when the left is sectioning out. Advanced surfers will find plenty to keep them busy across a long session.
Local knowledge
The reef at Rags is shallow and unforgiving — a wipeout on the wrong section can put you over live coral in less than a metre of water at low tide, so booties are strongly recommended. The take-off zone sits close to the reef shelf, and a caught rail or late drop will send you over the falls onto it; watch too for the lateral current that picks up through sets and pushes you toward the inside section. Boat traffic is a constant reality in the Mentawais — always check up-current before paddling across the channel.
Rags Right is boat-access only — you'll reach it via a surf charter or day boat out of Tua Pejat on Sipora, roughly 30–60 minutes depending on your base. Anchor in the deep-water channel between Rags Left and Right, and paddle a short distance to the take-off zone; the channel provides a relatively clean paddle-out clear of the breaking wave. Exit back into the channel between sets — do not attempt to exit over the reef toward the inside.
A high-performance shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range with a bit of extra volume under the chest is the sweet spot — this wave rewards drive and hold through hollow sections. Step up to a 6'6"–6'10" semi-gun when solid swell pushes overhead-plus, and keep a fish or groveller on standby for the rare small, gutless days.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
