About Hilisataro
Hilisataro is a reef break tucked away on Nias, offering consistent and shapely waves that reward intermediates looking to sharpen their skills. The wave peels with enough punch to keep things interesting without being overwhelming, making it a solid step up from mellow learning breaks. Expect a raw, uncrowded atmosphere typical of Nias's lesser-visited corners. A reef bottom demands respect, so booties and awareness of the lineup are worthwhile.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow, sharp and live coral at low tide — booties are strongly recommended and falling off the board carelessly will cost you skin. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge on bigger swells, so know your exit before paddling out. Sea urchins hide in the reef crevices near the entry point, so shuffle your feet rather than stepping blind.
Hilisataro is reachable by ojek (motorbike taxi) or hired car from Teluk Dalam — look for the coastal track that drops down toward the reef; a small warung near the path is your landmark for where to leave bikes and gear. It's a short scramble over rocks to the water's edge, so wear your booties from the shore. Entry is best timed on a mid-to-high tide over the shallower inside section; exit via the channel on the north side of the reef to avoid getting pushed onto the coral.
A versatile shortboard or mid-length in the 6'2"–6'8" range handles the wave's punchy sections well on a typical 3–5 ft swell. Step up to a stiffer, thicker shortboard or a small step-up if the swell pushes overhead and the reef starts showing its teeth.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
