About Teddy's

Teddy's is one of Timor's standout advanced reef breaks, throwing up powerful, fast-moving waves over a sharp coral shelf. The wave can produce excellent barrels and long, workable walls when conditions align, but the shallow reef is unforgiving for the unprepared. This is a spot that rewards confident, experienced surfers who know how to navigate reef.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The primary danger is the shallow, razor-sharp coral shelf — at low tide the reef is brutally exposed and a wipeout can mean serious lacerations or a reef rash that turns septic fast in the tropics. Strong lateral currents can drag you down the reef and make paddling back to the peak exhausting; watch for a sneaky rip on the inside that pushes toward the rocks on the south end of the bay. Sea urchins are embedded throughout the reef, so booties are strongly advised and avoid placing hands or feet on the bottom at any cost.

Getting there

Teddy's is accessible by road from Kupang — head east along the coastal road and look for the small warung and fishing boat moorings that mark the turnoff to the beach. Park near the track and pick your way down the rocky shoreline to the channel entry on the north side of the bay, which offers the safest paddle out and keeps you clear of the shallower reef sections; exit via the same channel and avoid trying to come in over the reef direct, especially at low tide.

Board

On standard 3–6 ft days a shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with some volume suits the fast, punchy walls; when it jumps to overhead-plus and starts clamping down hard, step up to a 6'8"–7'0" step-up with a bit more drive to handle the speed and give you paddle-in power on the bigger sets. Leave the fish at home — this wave moves too fast and the reef is too shallow to be messing around on something loose and low.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Timor

Full Timor surf guide →

Timor sits at the far southeastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), sharing the island with the independent nation of Timor-Leste. For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.

✈️Getting there

The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.

🛵Getting around

On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.

🌤️Climate & season

Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
