About Mawun
Mawun ist eine geschützte Bucht an der Südküste von Lombok, wo ein sanfter Reef Break es zu einem der freundlichsten Spots auf der Insel für Anfänger macht. Die hufeisenförmige Bucht blockiert einen Großteil der Swell-Energie und produziert kleinere, langsamere Wellen, die ideal sind, um das Stehen und das Finden des Gleichgewichts zu lernen. Die Umgebung ist auffallend schön, mit weißem Sand und türkisfarbenem Wasser, eingerahmt von grünen Landzungen. Bei größeren Swells bekommt die Welle etwas mehr Kraft und bietet einen natürlichen Schritt nach oben für diejenigen, die bereit sind, Fortschritte zu machen.
Local knowledge
Trotz des anfängerfreundlichen Rufs ist das Riff darunter lebendes Korallen und kann bei Niedrigwasser überraschend flach sein — ein Sturz im inneren Bereich kann dich schnell auf den Grund bringen, also überprüfe die Gezeiten, bevor du hinaus paddelst. Seeigel lauern in den Riff-Ritzen in der Nähe der Ein- und Ausstiegspunkte, daher sind Neoprenschuhe eine kluge Wahl für Neulinge. Bei größeren Südswell verliert die Bucht ihren Schutz und ein anhaltender Ripstrom verläuft entlang der östlichen Landzunge — Anfänger sollten sich in der sandigeren zentralen Sektion der Bucht aufhalten.
Von Kuta Lombok aus fahre westlich entlang der Küstenstraße etwa 8 km, folge den Schildern zum Mawun Beach — es gibt einen kleinen, gut ausgeschilderten Parkplatz mit einer bescheidenen Eintrittsgebühr und einer Handvoll Warungs, die kalte Getränke und Snacks direkt am Sand verkaufen. Der Zugang ist unkompliziert: Paddel vom zentralen Strand aus hinaus, wo der Sand am weitesten auf das Riff reicht und die weichste, nachsichtigste Take-off-Zone bietet. Verlasse den Spot auf demselben Weg und ziele auf den weißen Sand statt auf die felsigen Flanken der Bucht.
Ein Longboard oder ein breites, voluminöses Funboard (8–9 ft) ist hier das ideale Werkzeug — die Wellen sind langsam und brechen sanft, und zusätzliches Volumen hilft Anfängern, Geschwindigkeit zu erzeugen und das Gleichgewicht zu finden. An den seltenen Tagen mit größeren Swells ermöglicht ein Mid-Length-Board von etwa 7–7'6", dass erfahrenere Surfer ihre Turns ausziehen, ohne im Inneren gefangen zu werden.

Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
