About GTs
GTs is a serious, high-performance reef break reserved for advanced surfers who can handle fast, powerful waves over a shallow reef. The wave delivers heavy, critical sections that demand commitment and precision from takeoff to finish. Respect for the reef and solid big-wave experience are essential before paddling out here.
Local knowledge
The reef at GTs is extremely shallow and lined with sharp, live coral that will fillet skin on a wipeout — booties are strongly advised. Powerful, fast-moving rips run along the reef edge, making recovery after a hold-down disorienting and physically demanding. On bigger swells, heavy close-out sets can pin you on the reef, so always surf with a buddy and know your exit before you paddle out.
GTs sits off the west coast of Nias, most commonly reached by boat charter from Sorake Beach or the accommodation clusters around Lagundri Bay — a 10–20 minute ride depending on your base. There is no meaningful paddle-out from shore; boat access is essentially mandatory. Have the boat stand by for pick-up as the channel can shift and a long paddle back against the current is a real possibility.
On standard overhead-to-double-overhead days bring a performance shortboard or a step-up (6'4"–6'10") with a bit of extra volume through the chest to handle the paddle and drop. When GTs is pushing triple overhead or bigger, a proper step-up or semi-gun (7'0"+) with a pin or swallow tail is the right call — do not undergun this wave.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
