About Ombak Tidur
Ombak Tidur is a mellow Mentawai reef break that rewards intermediate surfers with long, rolling walls and forgiving sections. It's a great warm-up wave in the archipelago, offering plenty of time to work on turns without the consequences of heavier spots nearby. Expect fun, chest-to-head-high rides that suit those building confidence on reef. The channel makes it relatively easy to paddle out and position yourself.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and sharp enough to cause lacerations — booties are worth considering for less experienced intermediates. Sea urchins hide in the reef crevices, so avoid putting your feet down anywhere other than the sandy channel. Boat traffic from passing charter vessels and water taxis can be an issue; stay aware when paddling back out through the channel.
Ombak Tidur is boat-access only, as with virtually all Mentawai breaks — you'll be surfing it as a day trip or pass from a liveaboard or a resort on Sipora or the Pagai islands. Your boat captain will anchor in or near the channel; paddle straight from the boat into the channel and work your way into position from there. Exit back to the channel and flag your tender when done.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard in the 7'0"–7'6" range is ideal, giving you enough paddle power for the rolling walls while staying maneuverable through the longer sections. On smaller, mushier days a fish or hybrid will keep the ride lively; save any step-up for the rare occasions it pushes overhead-plus.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
