About No Kandui
No Kandui is one of the Mentawais' most coveted left-handers, delivering long, powerful barrels over a shallow reef. Advanced surfers will find it rewarding but demanding — the wave throws hard and the reef is unforgiving. On a solid swell it strings together multiple tube sections for rides that are hard to match anywhere in the archipelago. Come prepared with experience and respect for the reef.
Local knowledge
The reef is extremely shallow at low tide — a wipeout on the wrong section can mean a direct grind across live coral, and lacerations are common among those who push their luck. A strong lateral current runs along the reef on bigger swells, making it easy to get dragged out of position and into the impact zone; always mark your exit point relative to the boat. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the channel, so booties are strongly advised for entry and exit.
No Kandui is boat-access only — you'll reach it via a charter or day-trip vessel operating out of the Mentawai islands, typically departing from Padang (West Sumatra) or from a liveaboard based further south in the chain. Boats anchor in the channel to the right of the break; you paddle out through the channel and work your way into the takeoff zone from there. There is no land access, no warung, and no shore entry — if you're not on a charter, you're not surfing it.
Bring a proven high-performance shortboard (6'2"–6'6" with a touch of extra thickness) as your daily driver for the 4–6 ft range where No Kandui is at its best. On anything solid above 6 ft, step up to a narrower, pulled-in step-up or semi-gun — the wave accelerates fast down the line and you need to be able to set a rail quickly and hold it through multiple tube sections.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
