About Bank Vaults
Bank Vaults is a heavy, slab-like reef break that produces some of the thickest, most barrelling waves in the Mentawais. It's strictly for experienced surfers — the wave lurches from deep to shallow with serious force, creating square, grinding tubes that leave little room for error. When conditions align, the barrels here are world-class and completely hollow. Respect the powerful current and extremely shallow reef.
Local knowledge
The reef at Bank Vaults is extremely shallow — arguably the shallowest take-off in the Mentawais — and live coral can do serious damage on even a minor wipeout. The wave slabs hard and fast, meaning hold-downs are violent and getting dragged across the reef on exit is a real risk; booties and a helmet are strongly advised. A persistent lateral current runs through the lineup, making it easy to get swept onto the inside section or away from the channel, so always keep an eye on your position relative to the boat.
Bank Vaults is boat-only access — you'll anchor your charter vessel or day-trip boat in the channel off the break and paddle from the boat into position. There is no beach, warung or land-based access point; virtually everyone surfing here is on a liveaboard operating out of Padang, Sumatra, or a resort tender from nearby Mentawai surf camps. Time your paddle-out via the deep-water channel on the shoulder of the wave to avoid the impact zone.
Bring a proven performance shortboard or step-up (6'2"–6'8") with extra thickness and a rounded pin or squash tail to handle the slab's raw power and give you a confident bottom turn into the barrel. On bigger swells (6 ft+), upgrade to a serious step-up or small gun — this is not a wave to be under-gunned on; a fish or high-volume board will be completely outclassed by the slab.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
