About Oetune

Oetune is a beautiful beach break on Timor's south coast, backed by sweeping sand dunes in a remote and visually stunning setting. The wave is forgiving and fun, making it ideal for intermediate surfers looking for a relaxed session in an extraordinary environment. Shifting sandbanks mean the break can vary day to day, keeping things fresh each visit.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Strong and unpredictable rip currents are the main danger here — the remote beach and shifting sandbars can funnel powerful rips, so read the water carefully before paddling out. Shallow sandbar sections can catch you off guard on bigger swells, and the nearest medical help is a long drive away in Soe or Kupang, so don't surf alone. Jellyfish are occasionally present, and onshore winds can create messy, hard-to-read conditions.

Getting there

Oetune is roughly 100 km southwest of Kupang — take the main road toward Soe then follow signs south toward Oetune village; the final stretch is a rough dirt track best handled by motorbike or 4WD. Park near the dune edge and walk a short distance through the sand dunes directly to the beach; paddle out through the rip channel to avoid the shorebreak. There are minimal facilities on-site, so stock up on water and food in the nearest town before heading out.

Board

A versatile shortboard or a fun shape (7'0"–7'6") handles the everyday beach break peaks well, giving you enough float for the smaller, mushy days that Oetune often serves up. Bring a fish or hybrid for the frequent smaller, peeling swells — a step-up is rarely necessary unless a solid south swell pushes through.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Timor

Full Timor surf guide →

Timor sits at the far southeastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), sharing the island with the independent nation of Timor-Leste. For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.

✈️Getting there

The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.

🛵Getting around

On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.

🌤️Climate & season

Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
