About Nungas
Nungas is a long, smooth right-hander that reels along the reef south of Lakey Beach, giving intermediate surfers plenty of wall to work with. The wave is notably less aggressive than the nearby Pipe or Periscopes, making it an appealing option for those who want length and flow rather than raw power. On the right swell it can deliver some of the longest rides in the Sumbawa lineup. A relatively easy paddle-out and forgiving sections make it one of the friendlier reef breaks in the area.
Local knowledge
Although friendlier than its neighbours, Nungas still breaks over a live coral reef that gets uncomfortably shallow at lower tides — a wipeout on the inside section can mean a close encounter with sharp coral and sea urchins, so booties are worth considering. A channel rip runs alongside the break and can push you north toward the busier Lakey Peak lineup if you're not paying attention. Longboard and SUP traffic can be heavy on mellow days, so maintain situational awareness in the lineup.
Nungas sits a short walk south along the beach from the main Lakey Beach warung strip — park at Lakey Beach and follow the sand past Periscopes. Paddle out via the channel on the south side of the peak; this keeps you off the reef and makes entry and exit straightforward even for intermediates. There is no boat requirement — it's a paddle-access wave, and the channel doubles as your exit if the inside closes out.
A mid-length thruster or performance hybrid in the 6'4"–7'0" range is the sweet spot here, giving you enough paddle power to catch Nungas' longer, rounder walls without sacrificing rail-to-rail control. On smaller, mushier days a fish or funboard will keep the session fun; if a solid SW groundswell pushes the wave over 6 ft, step up to a rounded-pin step-up to handle the extra speed and hold through the longer rides.

Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
