About Sedi Point
Sedi Point is a mellow point break on Rote that peels with enough consistency to keep intermediate surfers happy for hours. The wave wraps around the point, offering longer rides and time to work on turns and flow. It handles a variety of swell sizes without getting too intimidating, making it a reliable option on smaller days. A relaxed atmosphere adds to its charm.
Local knowledge
The reef shelf is shallow at low tide — live coral and sea urchins lurk beneath the surface, so booties are strongly recommended and wipeouts at low water can leave marks. A moderate rip runs along the point on bigger swells; use it to your advantage on the paddle out but be mindful of it sweeping you past the take-off zone. Boat traffic from fishing vessels rounding the point can be an occasional issue, so stay aware of your surroundings.
Rote is reached by a short domestic flight from Kupang (West Timor) or by the Kupang–Ba'a ferry, followed by a road transfer to the Nembrala area. Sedi Point is a short ojek or scooter ride from Nembrala village — look for the track down to the point near the local warungs that line the beachfront. Entry is straightforward off the rocks at the tip of the point on most tides; exit via the sandy-bottomed channel on the inside to avoid scrambling over reef.
A versatile shortboard (6'2"–6'6") or a mid-length suits Sedi's peeling, user-friendly walls and gives you plenty of canvas to work turns over the longer sections. On small, gutless days bring a fish or a hybrid — the extra volume keeps momentum through the slower parts of the point.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.
🛵Getting around
Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.
🌤️Climate & season
Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
