About Telo Island Rights
Telo Island Rights is a punchy, right-hand reef break tucked within the remote Telo archipelago, delivering clean, well-shaped walls that reward surfers who can read a reef. The wave offers a satisfying combination of speed and form, making it a favourite for intermediate surfers on boat trips through the islands. The uncrowded lineup and clear water add to the appeal.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp, particularly at lower tides — a wipeout on the inside section can put you directly onto live coral, so reef booties are strongly recommended. Rips can develop along the reef edge on bigger swells, making it important to identify a clear channel before paddling out. Boat traffic from passing live-aboards and tender dinghies is a real hazard in the lineup, as the Telos are almost exclusively accessed by boat trips.
The Telo archipelago is roughly 150 km south of Nias and has no road access — you're getting here by live-aboard or chartered speedboat out of Lagundri/Teluk Dalam (Nias) or directly from Padang (12–16 hours by boat). The wave is surfed straight from the boat via dinghy drop; your tender will put you in the channel adjacent to the takeoff zone and pick you up at the same point after your session. There are no warungs or land-based facilities at the break itself.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits the punchy, fast walls on standard swell days; bring a step-up around 6'6"–6'8" if the swell pushes above 6 ft, as the wave can throw quickly and a little extra foam helps with early entry on the reef. A fish or hybrid works well when the swell is small and playful, which is common between swells in this region.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
