About Sirombu
Sirombu is a mellower reef break on the west coast of Nias, offering fun, workable walls that suit intermediate surfers looking to build confidence on a reef. The wave breaks with reasonable consistency and gives riders plenty of room to practice turns and transitions. It's a good option when the bigger, more exposed breaks are maxing out.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and sharp enough to cause serious lacerations on a wipeout — booties are strongly recommended and reef shoes help on entry. Sea urchins colonise the shallower sections of the reef, so avoid touching the bottom or scrambling over exposed coral. A moderate rip runs along the channel on bigger swells; use it to paddle out but respect it when paddling back to the take-off zone.
Sirombu is a small fishing town on the northwest coast of Nias, reachable by road from Gunungsitoli (roughly 2–3 hours on the Trans-Nias highway). Park near the fishing harbour or the local warungs along the seafront. Paddle out via the channel on the right side of the break — avoid scrambling directly over the reef on entry and exit.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard (7'0–7'6) suits the workable, intermediate-friendly walls here on most swells. Step up to a slightly fuller shortboard with more volume when the swell pushes past 4–5 ft to hold a good line through the longer sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
