About Le-Ba

Le-Ba is a characterful reef break that produces lively, hollow sections when the swell lines up, keeping intermediate surfers on their toes. The wave has a bit of personality — fast in places and demanding enough to push your surfing without being unforgiving. It's a great spot for those wanting to step their game up in the Nias area.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp — a wipeout on a solid set can put you into live coral, so booties are strongly recommended and helmets are worth considering on bigger days. Watch for sea urchins lurking in the reef shallows near the entry and exit points. Rip currents can develop along the reef edge when the swell picks up, so know your escape route before paddling out.

Getting there

Le-Ba is reachable from the main surf hub of Lagundri Bay — hire a local ojek (motorbike taxi) or drive south along the coastal road until you spot the break, with a short track down to the shore. Entry is typically via a channel on the inside of the reef; time your paddle-out to avoid getting pushed onto the exposed coral shelf, and use the same channel for exit. A couple of local warungs nearby can sort you out with water and snacks.

Board

A mid-length thruster in the 6'2"–6'8" range is the sweet spot for Le-Ba's punchy, hollow sections — enough foam to catch the faster walls but with enough rocker to handle the hollow moments. On smaller, mushier days bring a fish or a groveller to keep the fun going; if a solid 6–8 ft swell rolls in, step up to a slightly fuller step-up to handle the speed and power.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Nias

Full Nias surf guide →

Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.

🛵Getting around

At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.

🌤️Climate & season

Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
