About Hinako Rights

Hinako Rights is a powerful, fast reef break in the Hinako Islands off Nias, throwing up sharp, hollow rights that keep advanced surfers on their toes from the moment of take-off. The wave moves quickly along the reef, offering tight barrel sections and steep walls that reward aggressive, committed surfing. Reaching it requires a boat, which naturally keeps the crowd small and the experience raw. Combine it with a wider Hinako Islands surf charter for a truly off-the-beaten-path Nias adventure.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow, live coral and brutally sharp — a wipeout at the wrong moment can mean serious lacerations, so booties and a helmet are genuinely worth considering on bigger swells. A strong channel current runs alongside the break and can drag you off the reef quickly if you lose your board; know where the rip exits before paddling out. Boat traffic in the channel is a real factor — keep your head up when paddling back out, as charter and tender boats move through regularly.

Getting there

Hinako Rights is boat-access only, roughly a 1–2 hour boat ride from Lagundri Bay or reachable by liveaboard charter operating out of Nias or the Mentawais. Most surfers anchor their charter boat in the channel and paddle the short distance to the lineup — coordinate with your skipper on a clear pick-up point at the end of the channel for a safe exit. There are no warungs, facilities or shore access at this spot; bring everything you need from the boat.

Board

A high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a bit of extra thickness and rocker handles the steep take-offs and fast barrel sections best. Step up to a 6'8"–7'0" pin or step-up gun when solid swell pushes the size above 6 ft, and bring a thruster or quad setup for maximum drive through the hollow sections.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias

Full Nias surf guide →

Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.

🛵Getting around

At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.

🌤️Climate & season

Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
