About Asu
Asu is a playful right-hand reef break off a small island near Nias, beloved for its long, open faces and barrel sections that don't carry the same raw menace as nearby Bawa. Intermediate surfers with solid reef experience will find plenty of room to carve and explore the wave's various sections. It tends to pick up swell reliably and works across a range of sizes, making it a versatile option on a surf trip to the area. The island setting and light crowds add to the appeal.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide, with live coral that will do serious damage on a wipeout — booties are strongly recommended. Sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices near the entry and exit zones, so shuffle your feet and watch where you land. A moderate channel current can push you wide of the peak on bigger swells, and boat traffic from passing bangkas picking up surfers can be an issue in the lineup.
Asu is boat-access only — you'll need to arrange a bangka transfer from Lagundri Bay or Sorake Beach on the main Nias coastline, roughly 45–60 minutes depending on conditions. Most surf camps and guesthouses in the Lagundri area can organise day trips or multi-day stays on Asu itself, where a handful of simple homestays sit right behind the break. Enter and exit via the channel to the inside — never try to wade directly over the reef.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the majority of Asu's conditions well, giving you enough volume to trim through the longer open-faced sections while staying responsive in the barrels. Step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded-pin when solid swell pushes it overhead and the wall steepens; a fish or a mid-length is a fun option on the smaller, mushier days.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
