About Silabu Left
Silabu Left is a long, powerful left-hander that challenges advanced surfers with a fast wall and occasional hollow sections over a sharp reef. The wave has real grunt and rewards experienced tube riders and carvers who can match its pace. It works best on a solid southwest swell, turning on with grinding, mechanical precision. Be prepared for a shallow reef and strong currents that demand respect and solid water knowledge.
Local knowledge
The reef here is sharp, shallow, and unforgiving — wipeouts on the inside sections can result in serious lacerations and sea urchin encounters, so booties are strongly recommended. A powerful rip runs along the channel on larger swells, and getting caught inside on a set can push you across the reef fast; know your exit before paddling out. Boat traffic from charters anchoring in the bay is a real concern — stay visible and keep clear of the channel when paddling back out.
Silabu is a boat-access-only break, reachable by speedboat or live-aboard from Tuapejat (Mentawai capital, North Pagai sector) or as part of a charter circuit working the South Mentawais. Anchor in the channel to the right of the peak and paddle across — the channel entry keeps you off the reef on the way out. Exit via the same channel; do not attempt to walk across the reef, especially at lower tides.
A high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a bit of extra volume and a stiffer rocker handles the fast wall and hollow sections well on a standard swell. Step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded pin when it's overhead-plus and grinding — the extra length helps you keep pace through the longer, mechanical sections.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
