About Gerupuk Outside Left
Gerupuk Outside Left is a fun, open-faced left-hander breaking on the outer reef of Gerupuk Bay, offering intermediate surfers a quality alternative to the more crowded right. The wave peels with decent length and wall, giving room to link turns on a good swell. It can get choppy in the afternoon onshore wind, so early sessions are strongly recommended. Accessible by local boat from the Gerupuk village shoreline.
Local knowledge
The break sits over a shallow, live coral reef that becomes seriously unforgiving at low tide — falls here can mean lacerations, so rubber booties are strongly advised. A persistent cross-bay current runs through the outer reef and can push you off the peak quickly between sets; keep your bearings on the boat as a reference point. Afternoon onshore chop and boat traffic from the many jukung ferrying surfers between breaks adds an extra layer of hazard, especially on crowded days.
Head to Gerupuk village on the south side of Gerupuk Bay — there's roadside parking near the warung strip on the main track down to the water. Negotiate a boat ride with one of the local jukung operators on the beach (a shared boat is cheap; private is a little more but worth it for timing your sessions). The boatman will drop you at the peak and pick you up on demand — there is no viable paddle-out from shore, so agree a pickup signal or time before they leave.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length in the 7'0"–7'6" range covers most conditions here, giving you enough paddle power to deal with the current and chop while still being loose on the open face. On smaller, cleaner days a fish or groveller will unlock more fun; if a solid swell pushes the wave over 6 ft, consider stepping up to a rounded-pin step-up for extra hold through the wall.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
