About Don Don
Don Don is a gentle, beginner-friendly reef break on Lombok's south coast that rarely sees the crowds of the more famous Gerupuk peaks. The waves are soft and slow, making it a relaxed spot for those still mastering the basics of surfing. The shallow reef means low tide can be tricky, so timing your session around mid to high tide is wise. A quiet, unhurried atmosphere makes it easy to focus on learning.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and can catch you off guard at low tide — always check the tide before paddling out and stick to mid to high tide sessions. Live coral and sea urchins lurk beneath the surface, so reef booties are strongly recommended for beginners who are still getting used to falls. Rips can form on the inside channel when swell pushes through, so keep an eye on your positioning.
Don Don sits on Lombok's south coast near the Gerupuk Bay area — follow the coastal track south from Gerupuk village and look for the break off the headland. Entry is easiest via the channel at mid to high tide; scramble down the rocks to the water's edge and paddle straight out through the channel to avoid the reef shelf. A handful of local warungs near the Gerupuk waterfront are your best bet for a pre-surf coffee and to ask locals to confirm current conditions.
A longboard or a wide, high-volume funboard is ideal here — the slow, soft waves reward glide and easy paddling rather than performance shortboards. On the rare days swell picks up, a mid-length around 7'6"–8'6" will still handle it comfortably without outpacing a beginner's skill level.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
