About Areguling Bay Inside

Areguling Bay Inside is a picturesque intermediate reef break set within a sheltered bay on Lombok's south coast, producing consistent, well-shaped waves that reward surfers with decent technique. The wave offers a satisfying combination of push and length, making it great for practising rail surfing and reading reef sections. The inside position means it stays cleaner and more manageable than exposed outer breaks, even on windier days. A rewarding spot that often flies under the radar compared to nearby Gerupuk.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow at low tide — live coral and sharp rock lurk close to the surface, so a wipeout at the wrong moment can result in cuts and coral rash; booties are worth considering. Sea urchins congregate in the reef crevices around the entry and exit zones, so shuffle your feet rather than stepping boldly. The sheltered bay sees regular boat and jukung traffic ferrying surfers to the outer Gerupuk breaks, so stay alert when paddling across the channel.

Getting there

Head to Gerupuk village on Lombok's south coast — from Kuta Lombok it's roughly a 15–20 minute drive east along the coastal road. Park near the beachfront warungs at the water's edge and negotiate a short jukung ride across the bay to the Inside; most boat operators work the beach and pricing is standard and well-established. Entry and exit via the channel beside the break is easiest — avoid scrambling directly over the reef flat, particularly on the push to low tide.

Board

A mid-length or your everyday shortboard (6'2"–6'8") handles the typical conditions here well, giving you the rail engagement the wave rewards. On smaller, punchier days a fish or hybrid will help you generate speed through the flatter sections; only step up to a rounded-pin step-up when a solid south swell pushes the bay above head-high.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Lombok

Full Lombok surf guide →

Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.

✈️Getting there

Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.

🛵Getting around

A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.

🌤️Climate & season

Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
