About 20/20's

20/20s is a fun Java reef break that offers well-shaped walls ideal for intermediate surfers looking to work on carves and cutbacks. The wave breaks with enough consistency to keep sessions productive without being overly demanding. Conditions can shift quickly with the swell, so it pays to time your paddle-out. A rewarding spot that rewards surfers who can read the reef and pick their moments.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide — wipeouts can result in nasty coral lacerations, and sea urchins lurk in the crevices so booties are worth considering. A persistent rip runs along the edge of the break that can catch intermediate surfers off guard, especially when swell size jumps; use it to your advantage on the paddle-out but watch your positioning in the lineup. Boat and fishing vessel traffic passes through the channel, so stay aware when paddling out or drifting.

Getting there

From the nearest coastal road near Banyuwangi's southern coast, follow the track toward the beach — local warungs near the shore are a reliable landmark and a good spot to ask about current conditions. Entry is best via the channel on the southern side of the break, which keeps you off the shallowest sections of reef; exit the same way and avoid scrambling directly over live coral. On bigger swells or if you're staying in the area, some surfers arrive by local fishing boat (jukung) for a cleaner approach to the lineup.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range is the go-to for typical conditions, giving you enough foam to generate speed on the walls while staying maneuverable for cutbacks. On smaller, mushier days bring a fish or a higher-volume shape to keep momentum; if a solid swell pushes through, step up to a narrower, slightly longer board with more hold through the steeper sections.

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Java

Full Java surf guide →

Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.

✈️Getting there

Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.

🛵Getting around

Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.

🌤️Climate & season

Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
