About Dela Beach

Dela Beach is Rote's most welcoming reef break, offering gentle, rolling waves that are ideal for beginners finding their feet. The slower, forgiving sections give newcomers plenty of time to stand up and enjoy the ride. The beautiful beach setting makes it a pleasant place to spend a full day in the water. More experienced surfers can use it as a warm-up or wind-down spot.

Local knowledge

Hazards

Although the waves are gentle, the reef underneath is still live coral and can be sharp — a wipeout at low tide can mean a nasty scrape or cut, so reef booties are worth considering. Sea urchins hide in the shallower sections near the inside reef; shuffle your feet on the sandy patches rather than stepping directly onto rock. Rote's remoteness means no lifeguard or medical support on the beach, so even minor cuts should be cleaned and treated promptly.

Getting there

Dela Beach is accessible by rented scooter or ojek from Ba'a (Rote's main town), roughly 30–45 minutes on paved road that gives way to a dirt track near the coast — follow signs toward the beach and park at the small cluster of warungs above the sand. Paddle out from the main beach, aiming for the channel on the right side of the peak where the reef is slightly deeper; the same channel makes for an easy exit even on bigger days.

Board

A longboard or a wide, high-volume funboard (8'0"–9'6") is the perfect tool here — the slow, rolling walls reward nose-riding and easy cross-stepping. On the small, mushy days that are most common, beginners should avoid shortboards entirely; a mini-mal or foam board will maximise fun and minimise reef contact on falls.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Rote

Full Rote surf guide →

Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.

✈️Getting there

Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.

🛵Getting around

Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.

🌤️Climate & season

Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
