About Tanjung Aan
Tanjung Aan is a mellow reef break tucked inside a stunning bay on Lombok's south coast, offering gentle, forgiving waves that are ideal for beginners finding their feet. The reef produces small, slow rollers that give new surfers plenty of time to pop up and ride. The scenic setting — turquoise water and white sand — makes it a pleasure even on flat days. Come with a foam board and low expectations for size, and you'll leave with a smile.
Local knowledge
Although the waves are gentle, the reef underneath is shallow at low tide and lined with live coral and sea urchins — a wipeout in the wrong spot can mean cuts and spine punctures, so always check the tide before paddling out. A mild rip runs along the eastern edge of the bay on bigger swells; beginners should stay in the middle of the break and avoid drifting toward the channel's edge. Jellyfish are occasionally present during certain seasons, so ask locals or warung owners before getting in.
Tanjung Aan is roughly 7 km southeast of Kuta Lombok — take the paved road through Selong Belanak direction then follow signs to Tanjung Aan; scooter or car park directly on the sandy track behind the beach. Walk straight down to the shore and paddle out through the sandy channel toward the middle of the bay, keeping off the dry reef on the eastern horn. A handful of warungs line the beach for post-surf cold drinks and nasi goreng.
A soft-top foamie (8–9 ft) is the perfect weapon here — it's forgiving on small, slow waves and kind to you and others if the reef comes up to meet you. On the rare bigger swell, a longboard or mid-length will still be more fun than a shortboard at this gentle, slow-rolling break.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
