About Gerupuk Inside Right
Gerupuk Inside Right is one of Lombok's most popular learning spots, a sheltered reef break inside the bay where the waves are small, predictable and rarely threatening. Beginners can paddle out without fighting a heavy current and enjoy long, manageable rides to the beach. Boat access adds a fun adventure element, and local boat operators are used to ferrying learners out to the break. A great place to build confidence before venturing to the outer peaks.
Local knowledge
Despite being a beginner-friendly spot, the reef is live coral and sits surprisingly shallow at low tide — falling or wiping out badly can result in cuts and scrapes, so reef booties are strongly recommended. Sea urchins lurk in the reef crevices, so avoid standing or shuffling your feet on the reef when waiting for sets. Boat traffic inside the bay is constant; always be aware of the wooden jukung ferries moving between the beach and the outer peaks.
Drive or take an ojek to the fishing village of Gerupuk on Lombok's south coast, where you'll find a small warung strip and a boat-hire area near the water's edge. Negotiate a return fare with one of the local jukung operators — boats run all day and the ride out takes only a few minutes. There is no paddling access from shore; boat-in/boat-out is the only practical option, and the boat operators will handle your board.
A longer, high-volume board — a mini-mal (8'0"–9'0") or a longboard — is ideal for making the most of the small, gentle waves. Avoid bringing a short performance board on beginner days; the wave simply won't generate enough power to make it work, and a foamie or soft-top is a perfectly legitimate and safe choice here.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Lombok
Full Lombok surf guide →Lombok sits just east of Bali, separated by the deep Lombok Strait, and remains one of the most rewarding surf destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. It carries the spirit of an older Bali — quiet villages, jungle-clad hills, the towering Mount Rinjani volcano to the north, and a string of perfect bays and headlands along the south coast. The surf scene here is laid-back and adventure-driven rather than polished and packaged.
✈️Getting there
Fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP), near Praya in the centre-south of the island — a short 30–45 minute drive from Kuta Lombok and the main surf zone. There are frequent domestic connections from Jakarta, Surabaya and especially Bali (Denpasar), plus some regional international links.
🛵Getting around
A scooter is the default way to explore Lombok's surf coast — cheap to rent in Kuta and ideal for the dirt tracks leading to Mawi, Are Guling and the quieter bays. Bring board racks or a strap, and ride cautiously: roads range from smooth tarmac to potholed dirt, and rural traffic can be unpredictable.
🌤️Climate & season
Lombok has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season (roughly April–October) is prime time: cleaner conditions, lighter or offshore mornings, and the most consistent south-coast groundswell. This is when nearly every spot — Mawi, Gerupuk, Seger, Are Guling and Desert Point — fires.
