About Lafau
Lafau es un reef break satisfactorio en la región de Nias que produce olas suaves y bien definidas, ideales para surfistas de nivel intermedio que buscan fluir en oleadas más largas. La forma de la ola invita a encadenar maniobras y encontrar el ritmo en la pared, haciendo que cada sesión resulte gratificante. Es un spot acogedor que capta lo mejor que el surf de arrecife de Nias tiene para ofrecer a un nivel accesible.
Local knowledge
El arrecife es poco profundo en marea baja — el coral afilado y los erizos de mar son el principal peligro, por lo que se recomiendan encarecidamente los escarpines de arrecife. Un rip moderado recorre el canal con swells más grandes y puede alejarte de la zona de take-off; aprovéchalo a tu favor al paddlear hacia afuera, pero tenlo en cuenta en el regreso. El tráfico de embarcaciones pesqueras y chárteres de surf que pasan por el canal puede ser un problema, así que mantente alerta al cruzarlo a nado.
Lafau es accesible por carretera desde Teluk Dalam — sigue el camino costero hacia el norte y busca el grupo de warungs cerca de la playa, que sirven como referencia principal. Aparca cerca de la playa, camina hasta el punto de entrada en la orilla rocosa y calcula tu salida al agua por el canal más profundo a la derecha para evitar la plataforma de arrecife. Sal por el mismo canal; evita pisar directamente el arrecife en marea baja.
Un shortboard versátil de entre 6'2" y 6'6" es ideal para las caras suaves y bien formadas de Lafau con swell estándar — algo con algo de volumen te permite fluir cómodamente por sus secciones más largas. En días más pequeños y cerrados, lleva un fish o un mid-length para mantener la velocidad en las partes más planas de la ola; sube a un rounded-pin si un swell sólido lleva el tamaño por encima de la altura de cabeza.

Surfing in Nias
Full Nias surf guide →Off the west coast of North Sumatra, Nias is one of Indonesia's true surf landmarks — home to Lagundri Bay, the right-hand point at the island's southern tip that put the country on the world surf map back in the 1970s. It's a place of pilgrimage, where a single peeling wall over coral has drawn travelling surfers for decades.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers fly into Binaka Airport (GNS) at Gunungsitoli in the north of Nias, usually via Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) on a short domestic hop with Wings Air or similar. From Bali or Jakarta you'll connect through Medan.
🛵Getting around
At Lagundri Bay everything is walkable — the losmen sit right along the point, and you can paddle out from the steps. Many guests don't need transport at all once settled.
🌤️Climate & season
Nias has a tropical equatorial climate — warm and humid year-round, with water temperatures sitting around 27–29°C, so boardshorts and a rash guard are plenty (boots for the reef, not warmth).
