About Rifles
Rifles es un increíble right-hander ubicado en el archipiélago del sur de las Mentawai, en las islas Pagai. Considerada por muchos como la mejor ola de derecha del mundo, Rifles es una ola larga, rápida y tubular con secciones perfectamente alineadas que pueden extenderse por más de 200 metros. Es un spot reservado para surfistas avanzados, con secciones técnicas, barrels limpios y una velocidad que te obliga a mantenerte activo durante toda la ola. Cuando está en sus mejores condiciones, es sencillamente una obra maestra de la naturaleza.
Local knowledge
A lo largo del arrecife hay coral vivo poco profundo y muy afilado, y se vuelve peligrosamente poco profundo en las secciones interiores y finales, donde la ola pasa a toda velocidad sobre coral casi seco en marea baja — las caídas aquí provocan cortes de arrecife y algo peor. Hay una fuerte corriente que corre a lo largo del punto y que ayuda en el paddle de salida, pero que te arrastrará más allá de la zona de takeoff si no estás atento; además, las secciones largas y rápidas penalizan cualquier duda. Cuando llega un buen swell, este spot atrae a los barcos charter, por lo que las caídas en el pico y las colisiones en un lineup concurrido son un riesgo real.
Este es un spot de acceso en barco en las islas Pagai del sur de las Mentawai — se llega en barco charter o desde un campamento cercano en tierra mediante una lancha neumática, no a pie. Fondea o que te dejen en el shoulder, entra paddleando por el canal que corre a lo largo del arrecife y aprovecha la corriente para llegar hasta la zona de takeoff; sal de la misma manera, siguiendo la ola hacia el canal más profundo en lugar de intentar entrar por el arrecife interior seco. Programa tus sesiones según la marea — las mareas medias y altas cubren el arrecife y hacen que la entrada y salida sean mucho más seguras.
Trae una tabla rápida y con proyección, con suficiente longitud para enlazar las secciones y mantenerte en el barrel — una shortboard de alto rendimiento o una step-up en el rango de 6'2"–6'8" según el tamaño de la ola. Con un swell potente y consistente, opta por una step-up limpia o una small gun para poder correr las paredes largas; deja el fish en casa, esta ola es pura velocidad y no hay margen para quedarse atrás.

This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
