About Beng Bengs
Beng Beng es una izquierda tranquila y divertida ubicada en la región norte de las Mentawai, dentro de la famosa zona de Playgrounds. Es conocida por su pared amplia, sus secciones maniobrables, un fondo relativamente seguro y una excelente accesibilidad. Este spot es ideal para surfistas de nivel intermedio o para relajarse después de sesiones exigentes en Kandui o Bankvaults. No es una ola tubular como las más famosas de las Mentawai, pero su consistencia y su forma amigable la convierten en una de las favoritas para disfrutar de sesiones largas y sin presión. A diferencia de spots más intensos como Rifles o Kandui, Beng Beng es ideal para intermedios, tablas twin fin, longboardistas modernos y freesurfers que buscan flow en lugar de barrels técnicos. Una ola muy querida en la zona de Playgrounds, en el norte del archipiélago.
Local knowledge
El arrecife aquí es más indulgente que el de los breaks más duros de Playgrounds, pero sigue siendo coral vivo que se vuelve poco profundo en el interior con la marea baja, así que prepárate para cortes y algún que otro erizo si te arrastran sobre la plataforma. El principal peligro es el crowd — es una de las olas más accesibles y aptas para principiantes de la zona, por lo que los barcos charter y los grupos de surf camp se acumulan rápidamente y los drops-in son frecuentes. Presta atención a la suave corriente que corre a lo largo del arrecife con los swells más grandes.
Acceso solo en barco, como en el resto del norte de las Mentawai — llegarás en lancha rápida o en bote neumático desde tu charter o desde un camp de la zona de Playgrounds (el spot está justo en el cluster de Playgrounds frente a Karangmajat/Nyang Nyang). Salta del barco en el canal por el lado del shoulder y paddlea hasta el lineup; sal de la misma manera hacia el canal en lugar de cruzar el arrecife interior seco con la marea baja.
Es una izquierda juguetona de pared suave que premia una tabla divertida — tu shortboard de siempre funciona, pero realmente brilla con una twin/fish en los días de olas más pequeñas, y un longboard moderno o un mid-length se disfruta muchísimo aquí. No hace falta una step-up ni una gun a menos que llegue un swell importante, en cuyo caso coge un poco más de longitud para ganar potencia de paddling.

Surfing in Mentawai
Full Mentawai surf guide →If there's one name that makes surfers go quiet and start saving, it's the Mentawai. This remote archipelago of more than 70 islands sits off the west coast of Sumatra, fully exposed to raw Indian Ocean swell, and it has earned its reputation as one of the most concentrated, high-quality wave zones on Earth.
✈️Getting there
All routes run through Padang, the port city in West Sumatra. Fly into Padang's Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), usually via Jakarta, or via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore on regional carriers.
🛵Getting around
The Mentawai are about boats, not roads. Once you arrive, your daily transport to the waves is by boat — either the liveaboard itself or the resort's tenders and speedboats running surfers out to the breaks.
🌤️Climate & season
The Mentawai are equatorial, hot and humid year-round, with water warm enough for boardshorts or a thin top (roughly 27–29°C). There's no real winter — just wetter and drier patterns.
