About Tarimbang
Tarimbang is one of Sumba's better-known surf destinations, nestled in a remote bay that delivers consistent reef break waves for intermediate surfers. Right-handers peel across the reef with enough push to keep sessions engaging, and the wave can surprise with extra punch during bigger swells. The village setting and laid-back atmosphere give it a classic off-the-beaten-path feel. Expect a boat or bumpy road to get there — the effort is well rewarded.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp in sections — booties are strongly recommended, especially at lower tides when the coral is uncomfortably close to the surface. Sea urchins lurk in the reef cracks around the entry and exit zone, so shuffle your feet and watch where you plant your hands. Rips can run along the reef on bigger swells, and the remote location means medical help is a long way off — surf within your limits and don't go out alone.
Tarimbang village sits at the end of a long, rough dirt road from Waingapu or the south-coast track — a 4WD or motorbike is essential, and the final stretch can become impassable after heavy rain. Some surfers opt to charter a boat from nearby bays when the road is in bad shape. Paddle out from the beach in front of the village, aiming for the channel on the left side of the break to avoid scrambling over live coral; exit via the same channel and look for the sandy section to come in.
A versatile shortboard or a step-up in the 6'4"–6'10" range handles the reef's punch well across most conditions; bring something with a bit more volume if the swell is inconsistent and the wave is gutless. On rare bigger swells a step-up is worth having, but leave the fish at home — the reef is too shallow and consequence-heavy for a twin-fin at speed.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumba
Full Sumba surf guide →Sumba feels like a slip back in time — a wild, low-key island southeast of Bali that has so far escaped the development that reshaped its neighbours. Vast savannah plains, rolling hills, megalithic villages and empty golden beaches define a landscape that surfers describe as the Indonesia they were chasing all along.
✈️Getting there
Most travellers fly in via Bali (Denpasar). Sumba has two airports: Tambolaka (Waikabubak) in the west and Waingapu in the east, both served by short domestic flights from Denpasar, with some connections via Kupang or Bali several times daily.
🛵Getting around
Sumba is large and spread out, and the surf zones are far apart, so transport planning matters. Scooter rental is possible in the bigger towns, fine for short hops but tiring and exposed for long cross-island runs — and roads vary from decent asphalt to rough, potholed stretches.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumba has a pronounced dry and wet season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is prime time: cleaner conditions, dependable groundswell and the prevailing trade winds that groom the swell-exposed coasts. This is the core surf window.
