About Suckies
Suckies lives up to its name — a heavy, dredging reef break that pulls water off the shelf and throws a serious barrel over a very shallow reef. This is advanced-only territory, demanding a confident tube-riding technique, a solid duck-dive, and the composure to handle a punishing wipeout. On its day it produces some of the most photogenic, dangerous tubes in the Rote lineup, attracting experienced chargers willing to pay the price of admission. Respect the reef and pick your moments carefully.
Local knowledge
The reef is brutally shallow — a wipeout at any size will put you on dry coral, and the sucking action of the wave exposes the shelf even further on the draw. Live coral means lacerations get infected fast; booties and a helmet are strongly advised. Watch for the cross-current that runs along the reef edge on the push of the tide, which can sweep you onto the inside section if you're caught inside.
Suckies is reached by a short boat charter from Nemberala — speak to any of the boat operators on the beach beside the main warung strip and negotiate a day rate; most will drop you on the channel and wait. There is no paddle-out from shore. Entry is via the channel on the northern end of the reef; exit the same way and signal your boat early before the current drags you downswell of the break.
A high-performance shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a pulled-in tail is the go-to for the barrel — you need hold through the tube, not float. Step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded-pin when it hits overhead-plus and the takeoff gets steeper; leave the fish at home entirely.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Rote
Full Rote surf guide →Rote is Indonesia's southernmost inhabited island, a low, dry, sun-bleached slip of land hanging off the bottom of Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. It's about as far from the Bali crowds as you can get and still find world-class surf — which is exactly the point. The scene revolves around the village of Nemberala (Nembrala) on the west coast, where a string of guesthouses, surf camps and warungs line up behind the reef.
✈️Getting there
Reaching Rote is half the adventure. First fly to Kupang (Timor) — El Tari Airport (KOE) — via Bali (Denpasar) or Jakarta, usually with a connection. From Kupang's Bolok harbour you take the fast ferry across to Rote's port at Ba'a, a crossing of roughly 1.5–2 hours; a slower car ferry also runs but takes longer.
🛵Getting around
Once you're in Nemberala, most of the popular waves are close — T-Land, Boa and the beach breaks are within easy reach, and several spots are walkable or a short paddle from the main strip.
🌤️Climate & season
Rote has a pronounced dry, savanna-like climate — drier than Bali and noticeably so. The dry season runs roughly May to October and is the surf season: this is when consistent groundswell arrives and the dependable southeast trade winds groom the west-coast lefts, holding most of the season's offshore conditions.
