About Krui Right
Krui Right is the more demanding counterpart to the lefts along this stretch, throwing up fast, powerful right-handers over reef that keep advanced surfers on their toes. The wave can barrel and section quickly, requiring committed, precise surfing to navigate well. Swell from the Indian Ocean hits this coast with real force, so expect size and punch on good days. Only experienced surfers comfortable on shallow reef should take it on.
Local knowledge
The reef here is shallow, sharp, and unforgiving — a wipeout on a solid set can put you onto exposed coral in very little water, so reef booties and a helmet are worth serious consideration. Strong Indian Ocean rips run along the reef on bigger swells, and the wave sections fast enough that getting caught inside is a real risk; knowing your exit before you paddle out is essential. Sea urchins colonise the shallower sections of reef, particularly around the entry and exit zones.
Krui Right sits along the southwest Sumatran coastline near the town of Krui in West Lampung — most surfers base themselves at one of the surf camps or guesthouses lining this stretch of coast and paddle out directly from the beach in front. A short walk south from the main warung strip brings you to the channel; use it to paddle out and avoid scrambling over the reef. On bigger swells, entry and exit through the channel demands timing and confidence.
A performance shortboard (6'2"–6'6") with enough volume to handle punch and speed is the go-to for everyday surf; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded pin or step-up when the Indian Ocean swell fills in with size and power. Leave the fish at home — this wave rewards rail surfing and late drops, not float and paddle.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
