About Banana Island

Banana Island is a rewarding reef break off the Sumatran coast, offering consistent, well-shaped waves that suit intermediates looking to progress. Expect peeling rights and lefts over a coral bottom, best enjoyed when a solid southwest swell fills in. The relatively uncrowded lineup makes it a great place to build confidence and clock up quality waves. Come prepared with reef booties and a respectful attitude toward the coral beneath you.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The coral reef is the main threat — it's shallow at low tide and sharp enough to shred skin on a wipeout, so reef booties are non-negotiable. Sea urchins hide in the reef crevices, and rips can develop on the channel edges when a solid SW swell is running, so take a moment to read the water before paddling out. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and any transfer boats is worth watching, particularly on the paddle out.

Getting there

Banana Island is a boat-access spot — charter a local boat from the nearest fishing village or surf camp on the Sumatran coast (around the Krui/South Lampung area). The ride typically takes 20–40 minutes depending on your launch point; your skipper will anchor in the channel and you paddle the short distance to the lineup. There's no beach-side warung here, so come fully stocked with water, wax, and any spare gear you might need.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the peeling rights and lefts well in most conditions; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" if a bigger SW groundswell is forecast. A small-wave fish or hybrid is a fun call on shoulder-high or weaker days when the reef isn't quite pushing the wave to its full potential.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra

Full Sumatra surf guide →

Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.

✈️Getting there

Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

🛵Getting around

On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
