About Simeulue - The Peak
The Peak on Simeulue lives up to its name, offering a versatile take-off point where both rights and lefts peel away from a defined reef. Intermediates will find plenty to enjoy here, with workable walls that open up for manoeuvres when conditions align. It can handle a range of swell sizes, making it one of the more reliable options on the island. Expect a classic Simeulue experience — quality waves and a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and lined with sharp coral and sea urchins — booties are strongly recommended and a wipeout at the wrong moment can mean a nasty scrape or worse. A moderate rip runs along the reef edge on bigger swells, which can make paddling back to the peak tiring; identify your exit before paddling out. Boat traffic from liveaboards and local vessels passes through the channel, so stay alert when paddling out and during lulls.
Simeulue is reached by flight from Medan or Banda Aceh to Sinabang, or by overnight ferry. From Sinabang, The Peak is accessed by motorbike or charter vehicle to the nearest coastal track, followed by a short walk to the water. Entry is easiest via the channel on the inside of the reef; exit the same way and avoid scrambling over live coral — time your paddle-in with the sets to stay clear of the reef edge.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard in the 7'0"–7'6" range covers most conditions here and suits the workable walls well. Step up to a performance shortboard or small step-up when solid swell arrives and the rights and lefts start throwing harder sections.

Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
