About Simeulue - Dylan's Right
Dylan's Right is a mellow and enjoyable reef break on Simeulue that rewards intermediates with long, peeling right-handers on the right swell. The wave offers plenty of time on the face to work on turns and flow, making it a favourite among visiting surfers looking for fun rather than punishment. Simeulue's uncrowded nature means you'll often share the peak with just a handful of others. A great all-rounder in the island's impressive surf menu.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide, and although Dylan's is forgiving by Simeulue standards, a wipe-out on the inside section can put you onto live coral — reef booties are worth packing. Sea urchins lurk in the shallower reef ledges near the entry and exit channel, so shuffle your feet rather than stepping blind. Rip currents can develop on the push of the tide, so keep an eye on your position relative to the peak.
Simeulue is reached by flight from Medan or Banda Aceh into Sibigo/Sinabang airport, and most surfers base themselves at one of the island's surf camps or guesthouses who arrange boat transfers directly to the break — a short 10–20 minute ride depending on your camp's location. There is no beach-walk paddle-out; entry and exit is via a defined channel off the reef edge, which boat skippers know well. Your camp or guide will handle logistics and can read the tide for the cleanest channel entry.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits the long, peeling walls perfectly and gives you plenty of drive for carving turns. On smaller, mushier days a fish or mid-length will help you stay in trim and maximise the wave's drawn-out sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue
Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
🌤️Climate & season
Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
