About Yo-Yo's - The Hook

The Hook is the more forgiving section of the Yo-Yo's break, offering a well-shaped reef wave that peels with enough consistency to keep intermediate surfers busy. It produces reliable walls ideal for building speed and linking turns, with the reef below demanding a level of respect and appropriate footwear in the water. The take-off is manageable but the shallow reef means you'll want to know your limits. A great spot to progress when the swell is pumping along this stretch of Sumbawa coastline.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef below The Hook is shallow and sharp — a wipeout at low tide can put you on live coral fast, so booties are strongly recommended. Sea urchins are present in the reef cracks, and the rip that runs along the reef edge can catch you off guard if you drift too deep on the inside. Crowd pressure builds on pumping swells as surfers from nearby boats and Hu'u-area guesthouses converge on this more accessible section of the break.

Getting there

Most surfers reach Yo-Yo's by boat from Hu'u village or the beach in front of the local guesthouses — a 5–10 minute ride puts you right on the lineup. Direct paddle access is possible on smaller days from the shore, but the rocky shoreline demands careful timing on entry and exit. There are a handful of warungs and surf camps near Hu'u that can arrange boat transfers; confirm pick-up points before paddling out.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits The Hook well for everyday swell, giving you enough foam to generate speed on the walls while staying maneuverable through the turns. Step up to a slightly fuller, more buoyant board on smaller, mushier days, or bring a step-up if a solid groundswell pushes the size into the overhead-plus range.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
