About Tropical
Tropical is a mellow reef break that lives up to its name, offering a laid-back wave in a stunning Sumbawa setting. Intermediate surfers will find plenty of opportunity to work on their technique across its approachable walls and gentle sections. The wave doesn't pack the intensity of some of Sumbawa's heavier breaks, making it a welcome change of pace on bigger swell days. It's a scenic spot that rewards those willing to seek it out.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and lined with sharp live coral and sea urchins — booties are strongly recommended for entry and exit. A moderate rip can develop along the reef edge on bigger swells, so be aware of your position in the water. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and inter-island speedboats is a real concern, so stay aware of your surroundings, especially on dawn sessions.
Tropical is best accessed by boat charter from Hu'u or Maluk, as the road access to this stretch of Sumbawa coast is rough and unreliable — most surfers join a boat trip or hire a local jukung for the day. Entry and exit is over the reef, so time your approach with the whitewater on a higher tide to protect yourself from the coral shelf below. Ask locally in Hu'u or at any surf camp in the area for the current best drop-off point, as sand movement can shift the channel seasonally.
A versatile shortboard or a mid-length funboard in the 7'0"–7'6" range suits Tropical's mellow walls well, giving you enough paddle power without sacrificing too much manoeuvrability. On the rare bigger swell days when the wave picks up some punch, a step-up shortboard with a bit more volume underfoot will help you handle the added speed through the sections.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
