About Supers

Supers is widely regarded as one of Sumbawa's finest waves — a long, barrelling right-hand reef break that draws advanced surfers from around the world. When the swell hits the right angle, it unloads powerful, hollow sections that can link up into some of the longest tube rides in the region. The wave moves fast and the reef is unforgiving, so it is strictly a break for experienced surfers who can handle heavy conditions. If you're good enough, Supers will be the highlight of any Indonesian surf trip.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef at Supers is shallow, live coral and razor-sharp — a wipeout on the wrong section can mean a serious reef rash or laceration, and the inside ledge is particularly brutal at low tide. A strong lateral current runs along the reef during bigger swells, making it easy to get sucked out of position or pushed toward the rocks on the shoulder; always know your exit before paddling out. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf, so booties are strongly recommended for entry and exit.

Getting there

Supers is a boat-access break — charter a boat from Hu'u village or from one of the live-aboard and day-charter operations that work this stretch of Sumbawa's south coast; most packages out of Hu'u will include Supers on the rotation. There is no practical paddle-out from shore, and the boat doubles as your safety net for picking you up after long rides down the reef. Time your sessions with the skippers; they know the channel and the tides.

Board

On a standard 3–6 ft swell bring a rounded-pin or small-wave step-up (6'2"–6'6") with enough rocker to handle the fast, hollow sections without catching rail mid-barrel. When it pushes overhead to double-overhead and beyond, move into a proper step-up or semi-gun (6'8"–7'2") — this wave accelerates hard and you need the paddle power and hold to match it.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
