About Sori Point
Sori Point is a well-shaped intermediate reef break that produces consistent, workable walls with enough punch to keep improving surfers engaged. The wave offers good length, allowing riders to string together turns without the intense consequences of the heavier breaks nearby. It works across a range of swell sizes, making it a reliable option on days when the bigger spots are maxing out. A rewarding step up for surfers ready to graduate from beach breaks.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and sharp enough to cause serious lacerations on a wipeout — booties are worth considering, especially for beginners to reef breaks. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf near the entry zone, so shuffling your feet during entry and exit is essential. A moderate rip runs along the point on bigger swells that can sweep you off the shoulder, but it's manageable and can be used as a channel paddle out.
Sori Point is accessible by road from the town of Sori on Sumbawa's north coast — follow the coastal track to the point and park near the fishing boats or local warungs. Entry is best made via the channel on the inside of the point at mid to high tide; pick your way across the reef shelf carefully and time your paddle out through the rip channel to avoid the impact zone. Exit through the same channel — don't let the current carry you onto the exposed reef shelf.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles most conditions here and lets you make the most of the wave's workable walls. On smaller days a fish or fun shape will help generate speed through the slower sections; bring a step-up if a solid swell is running and the wave is throwing harder on the outside section.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
