About Little Bingin

Little Bingin on Sumbawa — not to be confused with its Bali namesake — is a sharp, punchy reef break that demands advanced surfing ability. The wave breaks over a shallow reef with a steep take-off, offering short, intense and occasionally hollow rides for surfers who can handle the drop. It can be a tough wave to read at first but those who invest time in the lineup are rewarded with exciting, critical surfing. Best approached with experience and a solid understanding of reef break etiquette.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef here is shallow, sharp and unforgiving — a wipeout on the wrong section can result in serious lacerations, so reef booties are strongly advised. Sea urchins colonise the exposed rock shelves used for entry and exit, and the rip running along the reef edge can catch out surfers unfamiliar with the lineup. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and water taxis can be an issue on busier days, so stay alert in the channel.

Getting there

From the nearest coastal road on Sumbawa's northwest coast, follow the track down to the cliff or beach above the break — a short but sometimes slippery scramble to the water's edge. Entry is best timed between sets via the channel to the side of the peak; exit the same way rather than attempting to come in over the dry reef. A local warung near the track head is your best landmark and a good spot to get eyes on the wave and local conditions before paddling out.

Board

A high-performance shortboard in the 6'0"–6'4" range suits most days, with enough rocker to handle the steep, punchy take-off. Step up to a thicker, slightly longer board (6'6"+) when solid swell arrives and the drop gets heavier — this is not a wave for a flat-rockered fish or a longboard.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
