About Kertasari
Kertasari is a reef break that offers intermediate surfers a quality wave in a relatively remote corner of Sumbawa. The break produces consistent, rideable walls with enough shape and push to make for satisfying sessions, without the raw intensity of the region's more advanced spots. The reef bottom means a degree of caution is always warranted, but surfers comfortable on reef will find it very rewarding. Its off-the-beaten-path location often keeps the lineup uncrowded.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp — wipeouts at low tide can result in lacerations and reef rash, so booties are worth considering. Sea urchins lurk in the crevices around the entry and exit zone, so shuffle your feet and avoid standing on the reef. There are no significant rip systems to contend with, but a careful eye on the tide is essential; this wave is best surfed on mid to high tide when the reef has enough water over it.
Kertasari sits in a relatively remote stretch of Sumbawa's coastline — most surfers reach it by road from Sumbawa Besar or Hu'u, with a rough track leading down toward the coast; a 4WD or motorbike is strongly recommended. Entry is directly off the reef or via a sandy channel on the inside depending on conditions — scout the lineup from the shore before paddling out. There are no dedicated warungs right at the break, so bring your own water and snacks; a small fishing settlement nearby may offer basic assistance.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range covers most conditions at Kertasari — the wave has enough shape and push to reward a performance board. On smaller, weaker days a fish or hybrid will help you make the most of the walls; if a solid swell pushes through, a step-up with added volume under your chest will keep you in control.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
