About Jimmy's Left
Jimmy's Left is the lesser-discussed mirror of its neighbour, peeling left across the same shallow Sumbawa reef with speed and consequence. Advanced surfers will find steep, punchy sections that demand commitment and precise foot placement. It fires best on solid south swells and offers a different rhythm from the right, rewarding those who take the time to read its subtleties. Not a wave for the faint-hearted — the reef is unforgiving on wipeouts.
Local knowledge
The reef here is extremely shallow at low tide — sharp, live coral sits just beneath the surface and a wipeout on the wrong section can mean serious lacerations or worse. A strong lateral current runs across the reef on bigger swells, making it easy to get dragged out of position and into the impact zone; know your exit before you paddle out. Sea urchins colonise the reef shelf, so booties are strongly recommended for both the entry and any scramble to safety.
Jimmy's Left sits along the southern Sumbawa coastline near the Hu'u / Lakey Peak area — most surfers reach it by motorbike or ojek from Dompu, with the Lakey Beach warungs serving as your main landmark and base. A short paddle from the channel between Jimmy's and the neighbouring right gets you into the lineup; time your entry through the channel at mid-to-high tide to avoid scraping across the exposed reef shelf. Exit via the same channel — do not let the current push you onto the inside reef edge.
On a standard solid swell (4–6 ft) bring a step-up shortboard — something with a bit of extra paddle power and hold to match the wave's speed and steep drops. When it pushes beyond 6 ft, a performance gun or a rounded-pin step-up in the 6'6"–7'2" range is the right call; this is not a wave to undergun on a big day.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
