About Cobblestones

Cobblestones is a characterful reef break in Sumbawa that gets its name from the rounded rocks lining its seabed, which create a lively, textured wave with plenty of punch. The break offers good walls for intermediate surfers to practise turns and the occasional hollow section to push into. It works across a reasonable range of swell sizes, staying fun from waist-high to well overhead. A rewarding spot with a bit more edge than a typical learner reef, but well within reach for competent intermediate surfers.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The rounded cobblestone reef is shallower than it looks at low tide — a wipeout can mean a scrape across rock rather than soft sand, so time your sessions around mid-to-high tide if you're not confident reading the depth. A moderate sweep current runs along the reef on bigger swells, and getting caught inside on a set can push you toward the rocky shoreline; know your exit before you paddle out. Sea urchins nestle in the cobble hollows, so booties are strongly recommended if you're scrambling over the reef on entry or exit.

Getting there

Cobblestones sits on Sumbawa's south coast, accessible by a bumpy dirt road off the main coastal track — a 4WD or motorbike is the practical choice, especially after rain. Park near the small warung that marks the clifftop trail, then pick your way down the short rocky path to the entry channel on the northern end of the bay, where the water is deepest over the cobbles. Exit the same channel; avoid scrambling straight across the reef on a dropping tide.

Board

A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the punchy walls comfortably for most conditions. Step up to a stiffer, slightly longer performance board when it's overhead-plus and the wave starts throwing proper hollow sections — the extra paddle power helps you make the drop cleanly on a fast-moving reef wall.

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumbawa

Full Sumbawa surf guide →

Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.

✈️Getting there

Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.

🛵Getting around

Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
