About Ujung Bocur / Karang Nyimbor
Ujung Bocur / Karang Nyimbor is a point break on Sumatra's southwest coast that produces long, winding rides with a consistent shape ideal for intermediate surfers. The wave wraps around the point with enough length to work on footwork and trimming, and it can hold size when the swell is pumping. It's a relatively mellow point by Krui-area standards, though a reef bottom still calls for mindful surfing. The surrounding scenery and relaxed vibe make it a rewarding destination.
Local knowledge
The wave breaks over a shallow reef with live coral that can cause nasty lacerations on a wipeout, so booties are worth considering on lower tides. A moderate rip runs back around the point on the inside — use it to paddle out but don't get caught in it on an exit. Sea urchins lurk in the reef cracks near the entry channel, so pick your footing carefully.
From Krui town head south along the Pesisir Barat coastal road toward Tanjung Setia and watch for the Ujung Bocur/Karang Nyimbor signage; several small guesthouses and warungs along this stretch serve as handy landmarks. Park on the roadside verge and take the short path down to the beach — the paddle-out is easiest via the channel on the northern side of the point, and you exit the same way to avoid the shallower reef sections.
A versatile thruster or mid-length in the 6'4"–7'0" range suits the long, winding point walls perfectly and gives you the drive to link sections. Step up to a 6'8"–7'2" step-up when the swell pushes overhead and the wave starts to wall and hollow; on small, weak days a fish or groveller will keep the fun going.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
