About The Peak

The Peak is a reef break that does what the name suggests — it peaks up with definition and energy, offering both lefts and rights depending on the swell angle. Intermediate surfers will find it a versatile and engaging wave, with enough power to progress and enough shape to enjoy. It can get busy when conditions are good, as peaks tend to draw a crowd. A well-rounded spot that delivers reliable fun across a range of swell sizes.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow and sharp at low tide — a wipeout on the inside can mean a close encounter with live coral, so booties are strongly recommended. Rips can develop on either side of the peak when swell size builds; know your exit before paddling out. Boat traffic is a real factor in Sumatran reef setups, so stay aware when paddling out or sitting wide.

Getting there

The spot is typically reached by boat charter from the nearest coastal village or surf camp — check with local operators for the current departure point and transfer time. Entry is best timed with the channel alongside the peak; avoid paddling directly over the shallow reef on the inside. A handful of surf camps in the region run regular boat trips out here, making logistics straightforward for visiting surfers.

Board

A versatile mid-length thruster (6'2"–6'8") handles the majority of conditions well here, giving you the drive to work both the left and right options off the peak. Step up to a rounded-pin or small step-up when the swell pushes overhead and the wave gets more consequential over the reef.

Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.

✈️Getting there

Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

🛵Getting around

On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.

Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
