About Mentawai-facing Mainland Reefs
Stretched along Sumatra's west-facing mainland coast, these reef breaks pick up raw Indian Ocean swells rolling in toward the Mentawai Islands chain. The waves vary from punchy bowls to longer rolling walls depending on the reef section, giving intermediates plenty of variety to explore. Crowd pressure is minimal compared to the Mentawais themselves, and the raw, unpolished vibe rewards those willing to do a little exploring. Go prepared — facilities are basic and swells can arrive with real punch.
Local knowledge
Reef here is live coral and can be surprisingly shallow at low tide — a wipeout on the wrong section will find you on the bottom fast, so check depth before committing to a session. Strong lateral currents and rip channels run alongside many of these reef sections, fed by the full force of unobstructed Indian Ocean swell; paddle back to your entry point rather than fighting across the current. Sea urchins are common in the shallows, so reef booties are strongly advised for entry and exit.
Access varies by section — most spots are reached via small coastal roads off the Trans-Sumatra Highway near Padang, then a short walk or scramble down a rocky shoreline path to the water's edge; a local guide or motorbike hire is invaluable for locating the right reef. Entry is typically a rocky or coral shelf jump, so time your moment with the sets and exit via the same channel you paddled out. There are no dedicated surf facilities — look for roadside warungs in the nearest village for snacks and basic supplies, and expect to self-organise everything else.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range handles the punchy bowls well and has enough volume to connect through the longer rolling walls; bring a small-wave fish or mid-length for the more gutless, reform days. When solid SW swells push overhead and above, step up to a 6'8"–7'0" step-up — these reefs can deliver genuine punch and you'll want the extra drive.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
