About Simeulue - Alus Alus
Alus Alus is Simeulue's friendliest reef break, with gentle, rolling waves that make it an ideal learning ground for beginners. The wave breaks softly enough to build confidence without the intimidation factor of the island's heavier spots nearby. It's a beautiful setting to take your first steps on a reef, though booties are still recommended as a precaution. A welcoming introduction to the magic of surfing in Simeulue.
Local knowledge
Although the wave is forgiving by Simeulue standards, the reef underneath is live coral and can still do damage on a wipeout — booties are a must and reef gloves are worth considering. Sea urchins are present in the shallower sections near the inside, so shuffle your feet when wading. Rips are generally mild but can pick up with a bigger swell, so beginners should stay aware of lateral drift and keep a landmark on the beach.
Alus Alus is reached by motorbike or car from Sinabang — the island's main town — along the coastal road, with a short walk down to the beach once you spot the break. Entry is straightforward off the sandy channel edge; aim for the channel rather than padding straight over the reef, and use the same channel for your exit. A small warung nearby is a handy landmark and a good place to ask locals for the latest conditions.
A longboard or a generous mid-length (9'0"+) is the go-to here — the slow, rolling shape of the wave rewards volume and glide, and will help beginners catch more waves. On the rare day it gets a bit of size, a fun-shape or minimal still works well; leave the shortboard at home unless the swell is pumping.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue
Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
🌤️Climate & season
Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
