About Indicators Cimaja

Indicators Cimaja sits just up the point from its more famous neighbour and throws up a more serious, hollow reef break suited to advanced surfers. The wave breaks harder and faster than Cimaja proper, with sections that barrel sharply over a reef that demands a confident take-off. It comes alive on bigger swells when the main point gets crowded, offering an intense alternative for surfers ready to step it up. Experience on reef is essential — this wave does not forgive hesitation.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef here is shallow, sharp and unforgiving — a wipeout on a solid set will put you onto exposed coral that can lacerate deeply, and sea urchins are common in the reef crevices so booties are strongly advised. A rip runs along the point that intensifies on bigger swells and can push you off the shoulder and into the impact zone quickly if you're not reading it. Boat traffic from fishing vessels rounding the headland is a real concern, particularly in the early morning — stay visible and aware.

Getting there

Drive or ojek to Cimaja village and make your way to the point; Indicators sits just up the headland from the main Cimaja peak — look for the rocky path that trails the cliff edge north of the warung strip. Entry is best timed through the channel on the inside of the point at low-to-mid tide; the exit requires care over the reef shelf, so pick your moment between sets and aim for the deeper water toward the channel. A boat from Cimaja beach is an easier option on bigger days when the shore entry gets sketchy.

Board

On standard swell (3–5 ft) a shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range with a bit of extra volume and a solid rocker will handle the hollow sections; step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded-pin or step-up when it's pumping overhead-plus, as the wave gets fast and critical and you'll need the drive. Leave the fish at home — this is not a small-wave cruiser spot.

Localism

moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Java

Full Java surf guide →

Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.

✈️Getting there

Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.

🛵Getting around

Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.

🌤️Climate & season

Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
