About Keramas Left / Cucukan
Keramas Left, also known as Cucukan, is the lesser-celebrated neighbour of Bali's famous Keramas right-hander, offering a quality left-hand reef wave for those willing to explore. It provides powerful, open-faced walls that respond well to mid-range swells, giving intermediate surfers plenty of room to carve. The reef can get shallow on the inside, so a good sense of positioning is key. Because most attention goes to the right, this wave often sees a lighter crowd.
Local knowledge
The reef is live coral and gets uncomfortably shallow on the inside section — a wipeout at low tide can put you onto the reef hard, so booties are strongly recommended. A persistent rip runs along the reef's edge and can sweep you toward the channel or the right-hander's peak if you're not paying attention. Boat traffic is a real concern here: jet skis and speedboats servicing the Keramas right frequently cut through the channel, so keep your head up paddling out and during lulls.
Keramas beach is easy to reach by scooter or car via Jalan Pantai Keramas in Gianyar regency — there's roadside parking and a handful of warungs near the main Keramas right-hand peak. Paddle north (left from the beach) past the channel that splits the two peaks; the Cucukan left takeoff sits roughly 150–200 m up the beach from the main right-hander. Entry is best through the defined channel at mid-to-high tide — avoid paddling straight over the reef on the push-in.
A mid-length shortboard (6'2"–6'8") with enough volume to generate speed on open-faced walls is the sweet spot for average swells; the wave rewards rail surfing over high-performance aerial moves. Step up to a 6'8"–7'0" rounded-pin on solid S/SW swells when the sets start backing up and the walls get heavier and hollower on the inside.

✈️Getting there
Bali is the simplest surf destination in Indonesia to reach. Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar handles direct flights from across Asia and Australia, plus connections worldwide via Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha and beyond. From Australia it's a short hop from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
🛵Getting around
The default surfer transport is a scooter (110–150cc). It's cheap, easy to rent daily or monthly, and lets you slip down narrow Bukit lanes and beat the traffic. Bring or rent a board rack/strap. Wear a helmet, ride sober, and know that traffic is chaotic and Bali's road-accident rate is high — many travellers come unstuck here.
