About Kolbano
Kolbano es un rompiente de arrecife intermedio y accidentado en la costa sur de Timor, situado en un paisaje dramático de playas de guijarros de colores y océano abierto. La ola ofrece un surf divertido y honesto con suficiente potencia para satisfacer sin castigar al surfista intermedio. La sensación salvaje y apartada de la zona añade atractivo para aquellos dispuestos a hacer el viaje.
Local knowledge
El arrecife es poco profundo en marea baja con coral y rocas afiladas e implacables; las caídas pueden resultar en laceraciones serias, por lo que se aconsejan encarecidamente las botas de arrecife. Un sólido shore-dump sobre la playa de guijarros hace que la entrada y salida sean incómodas y puede sorprenderte; las piedras de colores son resbaladizas y pueden rodar bajo tus pies. Los swells de océano abierto en la costa sur expuesta de Timor generan potentes corrientes a lo largo del borde del arrecife; conoce dónde están los canales antes de remar.
Kolbano se encuentra en la remota costa sur de Timor, aproximadamente a 2–3 horas por carretera al suroeste de Soe; un 4x4 es esencial ya que los caminos se deterioran gravemente en la temporada de lluvias. Estaciona cerca de la distintiva playa de guijarros de colores, que sirve como tu punto de referencia, y rema a través del canal en el lado oriental del rompiente para evitar lo peor del shore-dump. Hay instalaciones mínimas aquí, así que lleva tu propia comida, agua y combustible; un pequeño warung puede operar ocasionalmente cerca de la playa, pero no cuentes con ello.

For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.
✈️Getting there
The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.
🛵Getting around
On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.
🌤️Climate & season
Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
