About Northern Rights
Northern Rights es un potente reef break de derecha que exige habilidad y compromiso desde el momento en que remás hacia el lineup. La ola puede ofrecer paredes largas y rápidas con secciones de barrel que suponen un reto incluso para surfistas experimentados, y el arrecife de abajo no perdona. Los surfistas avanzados con sólida capacidad para surfear el tubo sacarán el mayor provecho de este spot cuando el swell esté en su punto. Está relativamente libre de masificación en comparación con los breaks más famosos de Sumbawa, lo que lo hace merecer el esfuerzo de encontrarlo.
Local knowledge
El principal peligro es el arrecife poco profundo y afilado directamente bajo la ola que rompe — las caídas en series grandes pueden arrojarte sobre el coral vivo con una fuerza considerable, por lo que los escarpines de arrecife y el casco merecen ser considerados. Una fuerte rip corre a lo largo del borde interior del arrecife, lo que puede hacer que los paddlings hacia afuera sean más eficientes, pero sorprende a los surfistas desprevenidos durante las series de limpieza. Los erizos de mar colonizan la plataforma interior del arrecife, así que evita apoyarte o trepar en zonas poco profundas durante la entrada y salida.
Northern Rights se encuentra en un tramo remoto de la costa norte de Sumbawa; el acceso más práctico es en barco desde Hu'u o a través de un barco liveaboard, ya que el acceso por carretera es complicado y la orilla no ofrece una entrada fácil a pala. Si te acercas por tierra, una pista de 4WD te lleva cerca de una punta rocosa desde donde una entrada bien calculada por el canal en el lado este del break te permite remar hacia afuera sin cruzar el arrecife principal. No hay warungs en el break, así que lleva todo lo que necesites — agua, cera y un botiquín básico de primeros auxilios.
En días estándar de 3 a 6 pies, trae tu shortboard habitual o un thruster de performance algo más largo y con más volumen (6'2"–6'6") que pueda manejar paredes rápidas y huecas sin perder el ritmo en bajadas empinadas. Cuando el swell supera la altura de cabeza y más, sube a una step-up de 6'8"–7'2" con volumen extra bajo el pecho — la velocidad que genera esta ola convierte una tabla blanda de olas pequeñas en un problema en las series más grandes.

Surfing in Sumbawa
Full Sumbawa surf guide →Sumbawa is Indonesia's rugged middle child, sitting east of Lombok and west of Flores, and it remains one of the archipelago's last genuine surf frontiers. Where Bali hums with traffic and beach clubs, Sumbawa offers dry savannah hills, empty white-sand bays, dusty roads and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace.
✈️Getting there
Most surfers reach Sumbawa overland and by ferry from Bali or Lombok. The classic route is Bali to Lombok, then drive across Lombok to Kayangan and take the public ferry to Poto Tano in West Sumbawa (roughly 1.5–2 hours). From Poto Tano it's a 1–2 hour drive to the Maluk/Sekongkang surf zone.
🛵Getting around
Once on Sumbawa, a scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to reach nearby breaks, and many surf camps in Maluk and Hu'u rent them with board racks. Roads on the main routes are decent, but expect potholes, livestock, dust in the dry season and stretches of rough or unsealed track to remote bays.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumbawa has a dry, hot tropical climate, drier and more arid than Bali, with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly April to October — this is prime surf time, with cleaner conditions, consistent groundswell and steady offshore-to-cross trade winds in the mornings.
